Mr. Sekhar Puli is a distinguished Business Leader, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist based in Washington DC Metro area , whose remarkable journey as an investor and entrepreneur spans over 30 years. His professional expertise started with building and architecting enterprise applications in Telecom, Healthcare and Financial Services. Asha-Jyothi (Founded 2003)
In 2003, while still a student and new to the United States, he founded Asha-Jyothi, a non-profit organization aimed at supporting underprivileged children and communities in India and USA. The organization’s initial aim was to educate just 20 children and provide free medicines to the elderly, but it has grown significantly over the years. Today, Asha-Jyothi educates over 6,000 children annually and organizes recurring medical camps across multiple villages in India.

  • Signature Fundraiser 5K Run/Walk in 10 cities in USA: Since 2009 as part of Asha-Jyothi’s commitment to raising funds and awareness for its educational and healthcare initiatives, Sekhar Puli spearheaded the annual Fundraiser 5K Run/Walk. This annual event, held in ~10 cities across the United States, has become a cornerstone of the organization’s fundraising efforts. The 5K runs not only raise critical funds for Asha-Jyothi’s programs but also engage local communities in supporting education and healthcare for underprivileged children in India. The events attract participants of all ages, with family-friendly activities and a spirit of camaraderie, while also helping to raise awareness of the nonprofit’s mission.
  • COVID-19 Response: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sekhar Puli’s work with Asha-Jyothi took on added urgency. The organization launched several initiatives to help vulnerable populations, providing resources such as food, medical supplies, and PPE to communities in India. Puli personally oversaw many of these efforts, leveraging his network to secure donations and partnerships and helped raise half a million dollars to provide hospital supplies and oxygen concentrators during a very critical time of COVID phase2
  • Educate-Innovate Program: After 10 years of giving back solely in India, AJ pivoted, created a new Educate-Innovate program, privately funded by the founders which Sekhar and Malini Puli pledged a $2 Million Donation to Public Schools in 2018. This initiative is primarily aimed at U.S. public schools, helping to create state-of-the-art facilities for students and bridge the divisive political narrative about immigrants.

About Malini Puli

Malini Puli is an Indian born naturalized American Citizen, who came to US like millions of other immigrants in pursuit of growth and opportunities. She came to Washington DC soon after marrying Sekhar Puli in 1997 and graduated from George Mason University with Masters in Computer Science. As immigrants living the American dream, we felt an innate responsibility to give back to the underprivileged back in India whose basic needs are unmet. Asha-Jyothi was founded in 2003, to provide access to education and healthcare to the underprivileged kids. What started with a simple thought of educating a few kids and providing free medicines for the elderly in remote villages now has grown to providing educational supplies to 6000+ kids annually and dozens of yearly medical camps for elderly in remote villages.

New to the concept of non-competitive running, Malini experienced a special joy and thrill running the Calistoga relay marathon with 11 other friends in 2005 . This led to the start of Asha-Jyothi 5K Run/Walk, a fun-filled family event that has introduced running as a healthy lifestyle to the Indian diaspora. The fact that today many Indians dedicate their introduction to running/walking to Asha-Jyothi 5K is a validation of the fact that acts no matter how small can make a difference. The 5K is also organized in ~10 different cities every year with close to 5000 participants and raises about $150,000.

In 2018 with an aim to integrate with the local community, to give back to public schools, to bridge the gap in STEM needs, to encourage early adoption of technology and to foster next generation innovators Malini and Sekhar pledged $2 Million dollar donation to introduce next-gen technologies into local public schools, especially that have a significant representation of underserved communities. The state-of-the-art innovation lab at Chantilly High School, Maker Space at Rocky Run School, Sensory room at Waxpool Elementary school are the outcome of that donation.

In 2022 in recognition of the deep impact to the community for the philanthropic work, Sekhar and Malini were awarded the Lord and Lady of the Fairfax County Malini’s professional career spans in prestigious companies such as FreddieMac, IBM, Northrop Grumman, JP Morgan Chase and manages the back office operations of the family office

A proud Mother of 2 beautiful grown up daughters, Malini enjoys running, yoga, travel, stimulating conversations, support of a large extended family all while working full time. She has run 6 full marathons and 25+ half marathons before tapering down to 10K and 5K Runs and accompanying kids to climb the treacherous volcanic mountain of Atitlan in Guatemala. Lately she believes in stillness :)
